# Best transactional email APIs compared (2026 Q3)

A disclosed, criteria-based guide to evaluating Resend, Mailgun, SendGrid, Amazon SES, and PulsePigeon for transactional email.

Disclosure: PulsePigeon publishes this guide and is one of the products named. We do not award ourselves a universal first place. The best choice depends on your message contract, operational constraints, and current provider evidence.

Start with acceptance semantics. Verify the request schema, success status, idempotency behavior, batch limits, cancellation behavior, and which errors are safe to retry. Run the same timeout and duplicate-send tests against every finalist.

Then verify observability. Compare the actual delivery-event taxonomy, webhook signature scheme, retry and replay controls, message-log retention, request identifiers, and the provider's published availability commitment.

PulsePigeon's current public path is REST and cURL. POST /v1/messages accepts an optional Idempotency-Key, and delivery events are accepted, queued, delivered, deferred, bounced, and complained. The TypeScript and Python SDKs are published at version 1.0.0 on npm and PyPI.

Resend, Mailgun, SendGrid, Amazon SES, and PulsePigeon can all belong on a shortlist. Dated /compare pages currently cover Resend, Mailgun, and SendGrid. Recheck Amazon SES and PulsePigeon against their current primary product and pricing sources.
